Female Cop who killed neighbor in his own home thinking it was hers, charged with manslaughter

The white Dallas cop who fatally shot a black man inside his home last week after mistaking his apartment for her own has been arrested and charged with manslaughter, according to officials.

She is accused of killing 26-year-old Botham Jean inside his South Side Flats apartment on Thursday night after accidentally walking inside — thinking it was her own residence. Guyger had just finished her shift and was still in uniform.

The shooting sparked major outrage on social media and widespread calls for Guyger’s arrest.

At first, she was given a slap on the wrist and asked to take a leave of absence. But authorities later obtained new evidence in the case, which led the Dallas District Attorney’s Office to file charges, according to S. Lee Merritt, the lawyer for Botham’s family.

Dallas police Chief U. Renee Hall told reporters on Saturday that Guyger’s arrest warrant had not yet been signed yet because the Texas Rangers were still probing the new information.

The decision was made, however, after “subsequent coordination” with the DA’s office, officials said.

He called on the DA’s office to treat her “like every other citizen, and where there is evidence that they’ve committed a crime, that there’s a warrant to be issued and an arrest to be made.”
